How to Get the Update

The Olympic Update is a free, automatic download as part of the Early Access version of Hades II on Steam and the Epic Games Store. The complete Patch Notes are available on Steam, in the game client, in the form of a dramatic reading (see below), and in our official Discord, where you can join a welcoming community of Hades II players and Supergiant fans.

Development Progress

Our first Major Update introduces a third Region and Guardian to the Surface Route, bringing it closer to the Underworld route's level of completion. We've also added the game's sixth and final main weapon, and iterated on a number of key systems. But there's plenty more to come, and we can safely say that our next Major Update in Early Access will not be our last!

Once we're sure The Olympic Update has stabilized and we've addressed major feedback as much as possible, we'll then focus on these major initiatives: · Climactic Confrontation: What awaits further beyond the newly-added Region? Once we add that, we will consider the main structure of the Surface Route to be complete. · New Boons: Boons are integral to the experience of Hades II, so we have some more additions planned on this front. The Olympians deserve no less! · New Foes: We plan to add even more combat encounter variety. Having lots of exciting and varied encounters helps keep Hades II feeling fresh.

We are planning our next Major Update to launch sometime in early 2025, in a little less development time overall than The Olympic Update. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we press on!

Onward and Upward!

Early Access has already been an invaluable and eye-opening experience for our team as we continue working to complete this game. As we move forward, we intend to keep making additions, changes, and improvements in an effort to create the biggest, most replayable, most feature-rich game we've made yet, and — most importantly — a worthy successor to the original Hades. We're very grateful that you've taken the time to play Hades II thus far, and hope you find it's getting closer to fulfilling its potential with the launch of The Olympic Update. Your feedback is always welcome, and thank you for playing.

Update: Applications for this position are now closed. Thank you to all who applied!

Our San Francisco-based team is seeking a UI Animator to animate our illustrated 2D menu screens and menu transitions in Hades II, currently in Early Access. This is a temporary, part-time, remote position on an as-needed basis for a limited scope of work. Here's the animated Well of Charon screen from the original game as an example of this type of work!

Job Responsibilities:

  • Cut and enhance illustrated 2D art to create screen transitions and menu background loops in 2D using After Effects (or equivalent)

  • Create supplemental animations matching existing UI illustration style

  • Render animation to PNG sequence for integration into our game engine

  • Organize files and templates for iteration and re-rendering

  • Make any revisions based on feedback from our UI & VFX Artist and Art Director to meet artistic requirements

  • Deliver on artistic / creative goals while adhering to production, gameplay, and technical requirements

About the Candidate:

  • Experience animating UI for shipped titles or completed personal projects

  • Organized, responsible, and able to work autonomously

  • Excellent written and verbal communication

  • Experience with Photoshop and video game accessibility standards

  • Familiarity with Supergiant's titles, especially Hades; general interest in video games

Compensation: We are open to a range of experience for this position, and will offer commensurate compensation. For those earlier in their careers at the Associate level (approx. 1-3 years experience), we offer $40/hr; while for those at Senior Advanced (approx. 12+ years experience) level, we offer $90/hr, with the range applying to experience levels in between. Our expectation is that more-experienced candidates would be able to deliver high quality first-pass work more often, requiring fewer revisions, and that such candidates may be more involved in the technical integration of their work as well.

After more than three years in development, our first-ever sequel is now available in Early Access on Steam and the Epic Games Store!! Watch our new gameplay showcase to see it in action. Note: This contains some spoilers!

We hope you enjoy discovering all that Hades II in Early Access has to offer! It already includes more environments, foes, and fully-voiced characters than the full version of the original game, and we have more in the works. An in-game development roadmap provides additional details about our update plans.

For owners of Steam Deck, Valve's portable gaming computer, we're pleased to report Hades II is Deck Verified!

About Hades II

Hades II is a rogue-like dungeon crawler in which you'll battle beyond the Underworld of Greek myth using dark sorcery to take on the sinister Titan of Time. It builds on the best aspects of the award-winning original in an all-new, action-packed, endlessly replayable experience rooted in Greek myth and its deep connections to the dawn of witchcraft.

As the immortal Princess of the Underworld, you'll explore a bigger, deeper mythic world, vanquishing the Titan's forces with the full might of Olympus behind you, in a sweeping story that continually unfolds through your every setback and accomplishment. New locations, challenges, upgrade systems, and surprises await as you delve into the ever-shifting Underworld again and again. For more information, check our Hades II FAQ.

About Early Access

This Early Access launch is an extraordinarily exciting moment for our team as we begin the process that we expect will help us realize this game's potential. As with the original, we designed Hades II for Early Access from the ground up, and look forward to hearing your feedback about all that we've built so far, and integrating that feedback into our plans for the rest of production! This is a game with many interconnected parts, and your feedback helps us ensure everything from the balance to the narrative are working as well as possible.

Should you play in Early Access, or wait for the full game? For many players, it's a good idea to wait for the complete v1.0 before diving in, as Hades II will grow and improve during Early Access, and the true ending of the story won't be available until then. But, if you like the idea of seeing the game evolve over time, and watching the story unfold more gradually, then Early Access is probably for you!

You may also want to hold out for the v1.0 launch depending on which platform you'd like to play on, as Early Access is only on Steam and the Epic Games Store. We expect Hades II to eventually be available for PC, Mac, and console platforms (though cannot confirm which platforms yet).

The Hades II Original Soundtrack

Music has always been essential to the experience of each title from Supergiant Games, and Hades II is no exception, with an original soundtrack by our award-winning composer Darren Korb crafted to fit the bewitching theme and variety of all-new characters and environments.

Now available alongside the game (and for free streaming on our YouTube channel!), the soundtrack is already nearly as expansive as the original, with close to two-and-a-half hours of new music... and still more tracks to be added as development continues. Note: We recommend first experiencing our soundtracks in-game prior to listening on their own!

What's Next

We're planning our first Major Update for later this year! Please note while we'll be monitoring feedback and reports carefully, this Major Update will take some months following our initial launch. Beyond that, we expect to be in Early Access at least through the end of 2024 in order to build out the remaining content we have planned.

As we take stock of the state of the game and what you think of it, we'll gain a clearer sense of just how close we are to the finish line. For now, it's too early to say when our v1.0 launch will be. Yet even though Hades II won't be complete for some time, we hope you really enjoy it as soon as you start playing.

Lastly: Thank you. This year our studio turns 15 years old, and for all this time we've remained small and independent, working on one major new project after another. None of this would have been possible without the support of our players over the years. So, whether Hades II is your first Supergiant game, or you've been with us since the Bastion days, we're grateful you could join us.

Update, April 26: Thank you very much for your patience as we conducted the Hades II Technical Test. The Test helped us identify and address a number of key technical issues we weren't able to find before, in preparation to launch Hades II in Early Access. We plan to start winding down the Technical Test on Monday, April 29, after which point it will no longer be available in participants' Steam libraries. However, we plan to launch Hades II in Early Access relatively soon after that, so please stay tuned! We hope you share our excitement for Early Access, and really appreciate your support and encouragement during the Technical Test!

We're getting close to launching Hades II in Early Access! As noted in our latest Development Update, a key step prior to that is our Hades II Technical Test, which we plan to begin shortly.

About the Hades II Technical Test

We're conducting the Hades II Technical Test prior to our Early Access launch to help us find and solve any technical issues we might have missed thus far, to ensure anyone who tries Hades II in Early Access can have a smooth play experience from the start. The Technical Test contains much less content than what's in store for the Early Access launch, and may be available only to a relatively small subset of players who express interest in participating.

How to Sign Up

We are using Steam Playtest to run the Hades II Technical Test. If you'd like to be considered for participation, you can sign up right now simply by heading to the Hades II Steam page, and clicking the button marked 'Request Access'.

If you're a content creator, you may also request a key using Keymailer, though please note that due to the nature of the Technical Test, we may not be able to honor all such requests.

Who Gets to Participate

A subset of players who request access will be invited to participate via an email from Steam with download instructions. We expect to start with a small player population, then grow it over time. So, even if you aren't invited to the Technical Test right away, you may still be invited later. Our process boils down to: invite some players, fix any problems they run into, invite more players, and so on. Once we're sufficiently confident that things are stable, we'll wind down the Technical Test, then launch in Early Access on Steam and the Epic Games Store relatively soon after. As the purpose of the Technical Test is to test the game with a relatively small audience, we may not be able to honor individual requests to participate. We will do our best to conduct the Technical Test as expeditiously as possible, then launch in Early Access, at which point the game will be available for anyone to purchase and play.

Technical Test Duration

The nature of the Test is such that we don't know exactly how long it will last, though our estimate is longer than a week, shorter than a month. We likewise don't know exactly when we will launch Hades II in Early Access, since that will depend on how long we end up having to run the Technical Test for.

Technical Test System Requirements

Here are the minimum system requirements for the Technical Test: OS: Windows 10 64-bit (or Steam Deck) Processor: Dual Core 2.4 Ghz Memory: 8GB RAM Graphics: GeForce GTX 950, Radeon R7 360, or Intel HD Graphics 630

Technical Test Contents

The Technical Test contains the first major area of the game, and other early-game characters, systems, and content. (If you played the original game, imagine a version where you couldn't get past Tartarus even if you vanquished its guardian.) If you end up clearing the first major area a number of times, the game will gently suggest that you discontinue play, as Early Access shouldn't be far behind!

Note that due to structural differences with the Early Access version of the game, save data from the Technical Test will not transfer.

How Technical Test Participants Can Help

Just play! If you encounter crashes or other technical issues, the game will provide instruction on how to report those to us.

Closing Remarks

Thank you for your interest in Hades II and this Technical Test! It's important to us to start our forthcoming Early Access with as few technical issues as possible, so that the focus can be on getting your feedback on the game itself. We're very excited to share that game with you soon, and appreciate your patience and support as we prepare!

HADES II Development Update

Back when we first revealed Hades II at The Game Awards in 2022, we said to expect more information on our plans for Early Access sometime in 2023. It's time we shed some light on those plans!

Early Access Starts Next Year

We now can confirm we're planning for Hades II to launch in Early Access in Q2 2024 on Steam and the Epic Games Store. We'll have more details on the exact date, pricing, and system requirements closer to that time.

Thank you for your patience as we gear up for this launch! You may be wondering, why can't we launch in Early Access, like, right now?! The game looked pretty far along in the first trailer! The reason is, Hades II will have at least as much content from day one in Early Access as the original game did back when it launched in Early Access on Steam. And, even though Early Access inherently means a game is not yet complete, we still want to do everything we can to make sure Hades II is worth your while as soon as you can play it in any capacity.

You can add Hades II to your wishlist on Steam or the Epic Games Store and join our email mailing list to find out as soon as our Early Access is available.

Prior to That: The Hades II Technical Test

Also in Q2 2024, shortly before we launch in Early Access, we're going to run a technical test with a limited sample of players. The purpose of this test will be to find and solve any technical or compatibility issues we might have missed, to ensure anyone who tries Hades II in Early Access can have a smooth play experience. To that end, this technical test will contain much less content than what's in store for the Early Access launch, and likely be limited only to a relatively small subset of players who express interest in participating. We'll announce more details about the Hades II Technical Test closer to when it's ready.

More About Early Access & Beyond

Early Access was vitally important to the entire idea behind the original Hades -- we decided it would be an Early Access game before deciding literally anything else about it, such as the Underworld setting. We've approached development of Hades II knowing Early Access will be no less important this time, though now knowing a bit more of what to expect from Early Access development, as well as more about what a Hades game needs to be. We believe the timeframe we're planning for will be the "sweet spot" where the game is far enough along that player feedback won't mostly consist of stuff we already know isn't there yet, but isn't so far along that it's too late in development for us to act on the feedback we receive.

Similar to how we approached Early Access with the original, following our Hades II Early Access launch, we'll have several Major Updates adding the rest of the game's core content and refining what's there based on player feedback. The story will expand with each update, as we introduce more characters, and deepen relationships with existing ones. This process will culminate in our v1.0 launch, which will feature the conclusion to the story and any other finishing touches.

We don't yet know exactly how long it will take us to get to v1.0 of Hades II, as our experience developing in Early Access has taught us (among many things) to expect the unexpected. For now, our focus is to keep building core content -- environments, characters, weapons, Boons, story events, music, and more -- as we gear up for our Technical Test and Early Access launch in Q2 this coming year. Thank you again for your patience and support as we work to ensure our first sequel meets our standards, and hopefully yours, too!

We were drawn to the opportunity to introduce Netflix's audience to our game, and look forward to hearing from our players there.

All you need is a compatible iOS device and a standard subscription to Netflix! While signed in to the Netflix app on your device, simply navigate to the games row and look for Hades there! Then you can download the game and play all you like.

Does Hades on iOS support Cloud Saves and Achievements?

Yes and yes. Please note, however, that due to a variety of technical constraints, automatic save transfers (i.e., cross-saves) with any existing version of Hades are not supported.

Is Hades also coming to Android devices?

We appreciate the interest though we have no plans for additional versions of Hades at this time.

Having brought our prior titles Bastion and Transistor to iOS devices, we're excited that Hades will be joining them there soon!

Music can be an extraordinarily important part of creating a specific mood and sense of place. That's why we've always worked closely with our composer and audio director Darren Korb to try and make the music of our games something special. Best of all, a game's music is something you can return to again and again, long after you're finished playing! But, physical copies of our soundtracks haven't always been easy to come by. So we're very pleased to have partnered with iam8bit to start to rectify this. We now have the vinyl editions of two of our most popular award-winning soundtracks back in stock at their online store:

Hades: Original Soundtrack

The Hades Original Soundtrack packs two and a half hours of blood-pumping music created exclusively for our god-like rogue-like dungeon crawler, including key pieces recorded with orchestral accompaniment at the world-famous Studio Two at Abbey Road Studios in London. The 30 tracks are spread across four two-sided 150g smoke-gray discs, packed with artwork by Supergiant Games art director Jen Zee in a jacket designed by Jesse Tan. To order or for more info, visit iam8bit.

Bastion: Original Soundtrack

The Bastion Original Soundtrack is the one that started it all, featuring Darren Korb's unique 'acoustic frontier trip-hop' blend of styles, and the unforgettable vocals of Ashley Barrett. This double LP is offered in 180 gram Black vinyl, as well as a new limited edition Cael Yellow vinyl exclusively available from iam8bit, in a double gatefold jacket featuring album art by Marie Bergeron. To order or for more info, visit iam8bit.

For years now, iam8bit has specialized in producing and shipping high-quality collectibles and soundtracks for many wonderful games, so we're excited to be working with them to bring our music to more of you out there. Thank you for all your interest in these and our other soundtracks, and we hope they bring you many lasting memories!

In Development: HADES II

Words cannot express how excited we are to unveil Hades II, our studio's fifth game and first-ever sequel! Meet the Princess of the Underworld in our reveal trailer, which premiered tonight at The Game Awards:

In Hades II, you'll battle beyond the Underworld using dark sorcery as you take on the sinister Titan of Time in an all-new, action-packed, endlessly replayable experience rooted in the Underworld of Greek myth and its deep connections to the dawn of witchcraft.

Availability & Early Access

We will announce when Hades II will be available and for which platforms closer to when it's complete. The game is in full production right now, though we have a lot left to build!

Like its predecessor, Hades II will be available in Early Access for some time leading up to its full v1.0 launch. Expect more information on Hades II Early Access sometime in 2023.

Add Hades II to your wishlist on Steam or the Epic Games Store to be among the first to know about our Early Access when the time comes.

About the Game

Hades II is a direct sequel taking place sometime after the events of the original game. No prior knowledge of the original Hades is needed, though there are plenty of connections!

As Melinoë, the immortal Princess of the Underworld, you'll explore a bigger, deeper mythic world, vanquishing the Titan's forces with the full might of Olympus behind you, in a sweeping story that continually unfolds through your every setback and accomplishment. New locations, challenges, upgrade systems, and surprises await as you delve into the ever-shifting Underworld again and again. Like her brother Zagreus from the original game, Melinoë is not a character of our own invention, and is based on an ancient Underworld deity thought to be related to Hades. What little ancient mythology exists about her was more than enough to make us want to explore her story and connection to her family, and in so doing, expand on our vision of the Underworld!

Read our Hades II FAQ for answers to many of your questions about the game. Please note, much like with our past titles, we plan to leave many details for you to discover!

We also invite you to join our mailing list, which we'll use to occasionally email you with information about how Hades II is coming along and other news from our studio.

About Supergiant Games

We are a small independent game studio based in San Francisco, CA. Since 2009, we have strived to make games that spark your imagination like the games you played as a kid. We now have more than 20 people on our team (a few more than on the original Hades), including all seven of the original members of the team that created our first game, Bastion, who have worked together in their respective roles on all our games ever since.

We work on one main new game project at a time, and Hades II is that project for the foreseeable future. The original Hades earned more than 70 Game of the Year awards following its v1.0 launch in 2020, and is our most successful game in every measurable way. Now, we are doing our best to make a sequel that lives up to its predecessor, and stands strong on its own merits. Your generous support is the reason we've been able to stick together as a team all this time, so thank you very much for believing in us and for your patience as we develop this game!
